White-collar workers often struggle to find time for exercise due to their 9-to-5 schedule. Actually, you don’t need to go out of your way to find a gym on weekends. In daily life, there are far more opportunities for exercise than you might imagine – you just haven’t been willing to acknowledge them.

Here are three smart tips to transform your burdensome fitness routine:

1. Seize Every Moment, Make Use of Fragments of Time

Running, weightlifting, aerobic exercises… they’re all too energy-consuming. Taking walks around can be a good alternative.

Try recording your weekly activities, separating active and static time down to the minute. For example, you can pace while taking phone calls in the office; skip the elevator and take the stairs (if the building is too tall, you can take the elevator part way and walk the rest); walk around during TV commercial breaks; or take a stroll to get mail or walk up and down the office corridor.

2. Focus on Calorie Burning as Your Goal

A long-term study of Harvard University alumni showed that people who burn 300 calories daily through exercise have the lowest mortality rate. This isn’t hard to achieve!

Many health organizations, including the U.S. Department of Health and CDC, suggest that 30 minutes of exercise is more appropriate, helping you burn about 210 calories daily. Even without “formal” exercise, you can complete your daily plan through “guerrilla tactics” like watering plants, tidying rooms, walking, or cycling. A person weighing 75kg can burn 187 calories by playing with kids for 30 minutes – that’s more than half of the recommended 300 calories. Doesn’t that sound easy?

3. Let Yourself Taste Success Regularly

If you experience the benefits, you’ll keep going. A study of 100 elderly men and women showed that people who start exercising will stick with it for at least a year if they see others benefiting from six months of persistence. Within a few weeks, exercise might not lower your cholesterol or reduce your waistline, but it can provide enough substantial “rewards” – reduced stress, feeling better, and improved sleep.

Fitness is actually a way to release life’s pressure. Green and simple fitness methods are suitable for anyone who doesn’t want to lift workout equipment. If you’re still worried about your laziness, why not try these smart tips and become a more relaxed person!
